InfoWorld has FedEx’d their final and probably desperation plea to Steve Ballmer on saving Windows XP in the form of a USB containing more than 210,000 users who want to extend the life of the operating system.
In an excerpt of the letter:
Dear Steve,
On January 2, 2008, InfoWorld launched the Save Windows XP campaign. As of June 27 at 2:00 PM Pacific Time, we have gathered 210,562 signatures from passionate users who demand the right to purchase Windows XP after June 30, the deadline beyond which Microsoft has said it will no longer license Windows XP through most sales channels. The Save Windows XP petition is enclosed as a CSV file.
InfoWorld contends that there might be a small chance that Microsoft would change their mind; but I do not believe so. Extending XP is like putting up a white flag on Vista. It would look like Microsoft is accepting the fact that Vista is inferior to XP.

We all know Bill Gates is no longer working full-time for Microsoft almost a week ago and for quite sometime, he has been looking straight at Steve Ballmer to do the job. I believe in Steve and so has Bill. Good luck Bill.

I am comfortable developing and architecting SharePoint solutions using my Virtual PC or connecting to a SharePoint server within our company network that I never thought of using my Vista laptop for SharePoint development. I just came across this post from BambooSolutions, webpart maker, about their “SharePoint on Vista” tool.
I might try this out in the near future but you can go ahead and give it a shot.
BambooSolutions’ post is here.

HP has a series of Windows Vista online tutorials that you may want to go through. Below are the topics they have posted online. With the retirement of Windows XP, even Vendors such as HP are doing their share of educating consumers on Windows Vista. They are aware that hardware sales may increase or decrease dramatically depending on the adoption of the latest operating system from Microsoft.
Microsoft® Windows Vista® advanced customization: increase bandwidth for network and internet connections
Microsoft® Windows Vista® advanced customization: back up the registry
Microsoft® Windows Vista®: use Disk Cleanup

As I have reported previously, Ready Boost would help speed your computer by caching items in a thumb drive. However, not all thumb drives is Ready Boost ready as it requires high end drives with fast read speeds.
On the contrary, neovik has written an article which forces Windows Vista to read the thumb drive and use it for Ready Boost. I have yet to try this out as I do not have a thumb drive I am ready to get damaged in case that actually happen.
Anyways, these are the first 4 steps (Proceed cautiously and at your own thumb drive risk):
1. Plug in the device.
2. Access your device properties: Start Pearl > My Computer > Right click device > Properties > Readyboost Tab
3. Select, “Stop retesting this device when I plug it in.”
4. Unplug the device.

Analyst Evans Data Corporation has reported that only 8 percent of developers are targetting Windows Vista while 49 percent are still developing for Windows XP.
John Andrews, CEO & president of Evans Data, says developers are on a wait-and-see mode on Vista because of driver issues, software incompatibility and steep hardware requirements.
It’s pretty ironic since developer’s are on a wait and see mode expecting that software and driver compatibilities would vanish when in fact, 49% of these folks are contributing to delayed stability of Vista because of their continuous support for XP instead of targeting Vista right away.
The major item that Microsoft needs to solve is the high demand of hardware requirements, and given the current economic state, it would be harder for folks to spend a lot of money for it. If only they made the hardware minimum not as demanding as it is today, then army of developers would have long targeted the new OS.

NBC is going full strength on Beijing Olympics by giving users online coverage to all its sports. However, only Vista users would be able to enjoy this. In an excerpt:
NBC announced two significant technology partnerships with Microsoft and Wavexpress today to provide 2008 Olympics coverage over the web. The new initiatives embody a natural evolution for Olympics coverage considering the times—but they’re available only to users of Vista or Silverlight.

Bill Gates is wearing an Apple t-shirt. Funny, I just found this over at Flickr. Whether it’s photoshopped or not, we may see more of it as he is going farther away from Microsoft and to his other commitments.

Bill Veghte, Microsoft Vice-president, quoted the launch date of Windows 7 by saying:
You have told us you want a more regular, predictable Windows release schedule.
Our plan is to deliver Windows 7 approximately three years after the January 2007 general availability launch date of Windows Vista.
You’ve also let us know you don’t want to face the kinds of incompatibility challenges with the next version of Windows you might have experienced early with Windows Vista.
Our goal is to ensure that the migration process from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is straightforward.
The more Microsoft announces the release of Windows 7, the more users would wait for it instead of upgrading to Windows Vista.

Wintel no more.
The term “Wintel” was coined earlier when Microsoft and Intel was inseparable from each other. Intel and Microsoft has been tight for so many years helping each other out with every release of their product. Intel has installed and implemented every generation of Microsoft’s Windows while Microsoft has promoted Intel at every chance they get.

This is an interview done on Steve Jobs a while back where he talks about Microsoft’s lack of originality. Everyone knows that, no big deal. He should have figured out how Microsoft racked up the dollars despite being un-original.

Microsoft is re-releasing Security Bulletin MS08-030 which fixes vulnerability in Bluetooth Stack. This update only works on Vista and seems to have problems on Windows XP. Hmmm, something fishy here.
Anyways, be sure to download the re-released version.

Apple has just released a fix for a security flaw in Safari running on Windows Vista. The flaw allows download of software from malicious sites without the knowledge of the user.
This flaw is finally fixed, almost two months after Microsoft has released a warning on it (found here).
The flaw works by luring a user to a site which initiates the download without his knowledge.
Apple before fixing the problem blames Microsoft about their executables which cause Safari to be vulnerable — ???
Download Safari here.

This is an interesting post on UAC wherein people of about 12% has decided to disable the feature of Windows Vista, making it behave like Windows XP. Though there are risks associated with it and Microsoft is doing things to make Vista secure even if UAC is disabled. 12% may be small, but the amount of Windows Vista deployments make this number incredibly large.
